The desert smells of time. You are walking west from the river road when the light changes — not a cloud, but a mountain of polished stone taking the sun.
Egypt, 1250 BC. Ramesses II has been king for thirty years. Memphis still breathes: the temple of Ptah, the living Apis bull in its cedar stall, the quay where grain barges unload and a crocodile slides upstream without hurry. A few hours north, the Giza plateau holds its breath. The pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure still wear their white casing. The Sphinx watches the sunrise. Priests carry bread and beer to kings who have been dead for thirteen centuries and are not treated as dead.
You walk twelve stations in the second person. Arrival first: heat, limestone, incense, the river. History second, and only as far as the stone will bear. Where scholars argue, the book says so. Where a girl with a water jug looks up at Khufu’s face and sees it lean, the scene is marked as a moment in time, not as a record.
The point is not to collect wonders. It is to stand in the shadow of six million tonnes and feel the Nile still rising. The pyramids do not answer questions. They outlast them.
Walk the ancient world before you visit it.
