Home, Again: The Journey of Ten Chinese American Immigrant Mothers
Available for 3 days. Available until 10/18/2026.
What does it mean to leave everything behind and start all over again?
For ten Chinese immigrant mothers, starting a new life in America meant far more than just crossing the ocean. It meant leaving behind careers they had worked for years to build, friendships that felt like family, familiar communities, and stable identities they had once taken for granted.
They came to America for many reasons: education for their children, a better future for their families, or simply to seek more possibilities in a new country. But once they arrived, many found themselves facing a difficult question:
Who am I now?
Home, Againtraces the deeply personal stories of ten Chinese American immigrant mothers who chose to begin anew. Their journeys take them through the challenges of language and struggles of cultural acclimation, loneliness and uncertainty, motherhood and sacrifice, and the difficult process of rebuilding a sense of belonging.
Yet these are not simply stories about hardship.
They are stories about reinvention.
Some of them rebuilt their careers, some discovered new passions, and others found fulfillment in unexpected places. They became entrepreneurs, educators, volunteers, community leaders, or advocators. Many learned that creating a new life did not mean abandoning who they were-- it meant discovering new aspects of themselves that they had never known before.
Through one-on-one conversations and recalling personal memories, these women revealed to the author the moments that had shaped them: the difficult decisions they struggled with, the aspirations they set aside, the setbacks they endured, and the courage to keep moving forward.
Their experiences also paint a larger picture: the journey of Chinese immigrants building new lives in America, navigating between two cultures, and gradually thriving to succeed in their new homeland.
Written from the perspective of a teenage daughter who grew up watching her own mother embark on this journey, Home, Again is both a collection of immigrant stories and a personal exploration of motherhood, identity, sacrifice, courage, and belonging.
For anyone who has ever left something familiar behind, started over, or wondered where they truly belong, these stories offer a reminder:
Sometimes home is not a place we return to.
Sometimes home is something we learn to create again.
