This book begins with damage and ends with accounting. Between those points lie Arthur and Rufus, two men whose friendship forms out of whiskey, land, work, and the uneasy knowledge that money makes a man visible. Some are human: disappointed heirs, desperate kin, jealous neighbors, and a careful accountant who understands how greed can hide in ledgers until blood is needed to protect the numbers. Others are not easily named. A pair of ravens appears where lies are written down as fact. They do not explain themselves. They observe. They remember. They wait. A death may be called suicide.
